← VirtualLocation Support

Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 28, 2026.

The short version: by default, nothing leaves your Mac. VirtualLocation has no accounts, no ads, and no tracking.

What data is collected, and how

  • Location simulation stays local. Setting a virtual location talks to your device over a local (127.0.0.1) channel only.
  • Your content is stored on your Mac. Favorite places, saved routes, and search history live in the app’s local storage.
  • iCloud sync (on by default). Your favorite places, saved routes, and search history sync across your Macs through your private iCloud (CloudKit) database. You can turn it off in the app’s Settings. Your license, crash-reporting choice, device favorites, and map preferences never sync.
  • Crash reports (off by default). If you turn on “Share Crash Reports” in Settings, the app sends minimal crash stack traces or stable error codes, plus the app version, over HTTPS. No local logs are attached.
  • Update checks. The app downloads a public appcast file over HTTPS to compare versions, and installs an update only after you confirm.
  • VIP license. Activating a license contacts the payment provider once with your license key, and an activation ID is recorded. After that the license works offline.

How the data is used

  • iCloud data: to make your places, routes, and history available on your other Macs.
  • Crash reports: to find and fix bugs.
  • License activation: to verify your purchase.

Nothing is used for advertising, tracking, or sale, and nothing is used to profile you.

Third parties

  • Apple iCloud / CloudKit holds your synced data in your private database, under your iCloud account.
  • Sentry receives crash reports only if you opt in; the project is configured not to store IP addresses and to strip location fields.
  • Dodo Payments processes purchases and license activation.
  • GitHub hosts the update feed and the download files.

Each of these receives only the data described above, and protects it under its own privacy policy.

Retention and deletion

  • Data on your Mac stays until you delete it in the app or uninstall the app.
  • Synced data lives in your iCloud account. Deleting an item in the app deletes it from iCloud; turning off sync stops all future syncing.
  • To remove a VIP license, use Remove License in the app — it deactivates the license locally and releases the activation remotely where possible.
  • You can email me at any time to ask for deletion of any data tied to you, such as a crash report.
  • Crash reports: turn off “Share Crash Reports” in Settings; nothing more is sent.
  • iCloud sync: turn it off in Settings. Data already synced stays in your iCloud account until you delete it.
  • License: use Remove License in the app.
